Structure and Function of the Adrenal Gland of Fishes

DAVID GORDON BUTLER
Department of Zoology, University of Toronto Toronto 181, Ontario, Canada

The structure and distribution of the adrenal gland in fishes is reviewed. Studies on the in vitro and in vivo biosynthesis of adrenocortical steroids and their occurrence in the blood of fishes are evaluated in the light of modern techniques for the identification and quantification of steroids. There follows an appraisal of some literature dealing with the adrenocortical control of intermediary metabolism and ion transport in fishes.
