Understanding Embryonic Development: A Contemporary View1
Division of Biology, California Institute of Technology Pasadena, California 91125
The immediate causal explanation for cell differentiation is the regulated ontogenic expression of specific sets of genes in cells of each given type. Demonstration of this principle has resulted in a revolutionary reorientation of the study of early development. Imposition of spatial patterns of differential gene expression at the onset of Drosophila and sea urchin development is briefly discussed. The mechanisms by which this process occurs in these two systems differ in fundamental respects. Molecular analysis of differential gene function in the embryo promises to provide a fruitful approach to classically defined questions, such as the nature of induction, regulative development, and cytoplasmic localization.
