Beating the Heat in Obligate Insect Endotherms: The Environmental Problem and the Organismal Solutions1
Department of Zoology, University of Vermont Burlington, Vermont 05405
In insects, heat production, and by inference passively generated body temperatures, can now be predicted given certain characteristics of flight, insulation and body size. The potential problem of overheating can then also be predicted. But the primary biological interests are in finding the solutions to problems. This review of discoveries of mechanisms of insect thermoregulation shows where attempts to extrapolate from generalities have had mixed results. Specific knowledge of the organisms had pointed to potential solutions that could then be explored. But specific solutions could only be predicted post hoc.
