Cover image: Model depicting the influence of the tidal cycle on the respiratory modes of the air-breathing mudskipper (Scartelaos histophorus). The graph shows how the tidal cycle affects the respiratory modes of Scartelaos, which range from amphibious air breathing during low tide to aquatic respiration when the fish is confined to its burrow during high tide and later during high tide when burrow water is hypoxic, emergency or facultative air breathing using the reserve air the fish had stored in the burrow during the previous low tide. Submitted by Martin Flück, Keith A. Webster, Jeffrey Graham, Folco Giomi, Frank Gerlach, and Anke Schmitz, "Coping with cyclic oxygen availability: evolutionary aspects."
